Review:
With the same deeply felt evocation of childhood-and the same exceptional musical chops-that defined his 2003 CD, "I Love to Ride My Bike," Jamie Barnett, a kindergarten teacher, acoustic musician and singer-songwriter, creates a world of beauty, peace and lively fun. There are the pleasures of pancakes for breakfast and sledding in the snow. A shoe, lost and found, is a perfect illustration of a child's changeable moods in "My Laughter." Chores are woven into a child's eager anticipation of a friend's visit in "Fold My Clothes," while "Step Outside" is a tender invitation to shake off the blues: "Step outside, start walking around, look up at the sky, start singin' a song." Barnett's delicate duet with his young niece, "The Sun Shines," is simply exquisite. His "381 Days," about civil rights icon Rosa Parks and the historic bus boycott in Alabama ("It took 381 days to change that hateful law"), while a thematic detour, is just as well crafted. Maybe it isn't such a detour, however: The purity and polish of Barnett's musicianship shapes each song; so does his loving, respectful acknowledgement of children as unique thinking and feeling beings.
