Wag Your Tail
Spring 2009 MusicReview:
"Wag your tail puppy dog … stop howling at the moon. Wag your tail puppy dog … your boy is coming home soon." Tenderness and evocative layers of meaning warm this outstanding new album from Jamie Barnett. With folk-style acoustic guitar and mellow vocals, it recalls old-school Simon and Garfunkel spiked with just a twist of Lyle Lovett. In his original songs about a trip to the beach ("Ride on a Train"), observations of nature ("This Tree," "Hello Lizard") and a prolific lemon tree ("Lemonade"), the everyday is anything but ordinary here. Even the traditional "Shortnin' Bread" takes an innovative flight of fancy with new verses involving well-shod little bugs. Barnett invites music-making participation and the sing-along coziness of the album is enhanced by contributions from Barnett's musical family, including sons Sean and Nicolas on bass guitar and baritone horn.
